MAKING MYSELF VISIBLE

Painting myself into visibility is not just important to me when I prepare for a photo shoot or performance. It is my daily routine even if I don’t go out which has been basically my reality for the past eleven months. I don’t meet people or if I do I’m wearing a mask, sun glasses (they work like a protective shield) as well as a hat. Nobody really sees my makeup. But my daily makeup routine is very important to me. I do my face yoga while I apply moisturizers, and painting my face is mostly for myself. How I see myself, want to see myself, lining my eyes as well as aligning my mood while I go inward and accentuate not just my lips and eyes but also the tone of my day: bold, strong, gentle, quiet, sparkly, magical, simple, witchy, wise, or however else I like to feel and explore.

STRIPPER NURTURES HERSELF

The young, rundown mother said to me as she watched me curiously do my makeup in front of the giant mirror, “You are wasting all this time doing your makeup.” I explained to her, “A beautiful woman can never waste time spending time with herself, doing what feels good and what makes her happy. This is my time to be alone with myself, listen inward, and dedicate my attention to my beauty and well being. It’s one way of recharging in order to continue to nurture others without being rundown.”
